The Midlife Spiral:
A Rite of Passage through Fire & Water
April 22 - June 3
A seven week container facilitated and held by Elisa Spring & Leigh McDaniel
We are so glad you landed here.
We are two women in midlife who have traveled together, as beloved kin, for over a decade.
We have engaged in countless hours of conversation and deep explorations within ourselves and together, and with our clients and friends during this time of our lives, and we recognize the importance and the vitality that happens when we collectively explore what we are calling The Midlife Spiral: A Rite of Passage through Fire & Water.
This deep dive, exploratory class is open to anyone who is near perimenopause, who is already inside the season of perimenopause, those who have passed the threshold into menopause, and those who desire to be held in a container with the support of others, during this rich spiritual and somatic rite of passage.
The framework for this class will offer up ample time to explore what the Midlife Spiral means to you. Each one of our journey’s are unique and learning from one another is part of the medicine.
There will be storytelling & ritual that will bring both laughter and tears, relational practices for our maturing selves, creative writing prompts, body care to take with you, and group counsel.
The Midlife Spiral begins on Wednesday, April 22nd for 7 weeks
We meet online on Wednesdays from 12-2pm PST/9-11am HST
April 22 - June 3
Please check your specific timezones!
There is so much that must be unraveled during this rite of passage and simultaneously, there is so much to be reclaimed. And, we can only reclaim that which we are honestly looking straight in the eye, and becoming consciously intimate with. And as I have found with many things: some of it we have to do alone, and some of it must be done within the bodies of our communities and collectives.
We recognize that perimenopause and menopause have been largely pathologized and held in the darkness, like the other rites of passage that we journey through as women. We feel strongly that as we learn and deepen into our ability to journey inwards, as well as bring this rite of passage out of the realm of the taboo, we will be changing not only our story, but the trajectory of lived experiences for those who are following in our footsteps. We do not do this work for only ourselves— we do this to liberate and empower and uplift the greater collective body of women’s gnosis and women’s wisdom that is so deeply needed.
Your Guides for The Midlife Spiral: The Rites of Passage through Fire & Water
ELISA SPRING
Elisa is a longtime Mentor + Intimacy Midwife, Grief Doula, Threshold Tender, Facilitator, and Dancer. Her work and passion is in the realm of re-imagining intimate relationships and reconnection to eros and aliveness in body, relationships, and work. She supports others in the deep exploration of their intimacy with grief and with pleasure, the expansion of their somatic expression, and the cultivation of new skills to build capacity for living into a life that is more cohesive and true. Elisa offers guidance, mentorship, and integration during times of transformation and the crossing of personal thresholds. She is a Mother of four magnificent children who are now 11, 13, 19, and 25 and lives on the island of O’ahu where she enjoys a large range of shenanigans. She previously held and facilitated two cohorts of Perimenopause As Portal and loved every minute of bringing women in midlife, together.
LEIGH MCDANIEL
Leigh is a womb witch, a radical pelvic care practitioner, animist, medium, midwife to pleasure, and hands-on/hands-in bodyworker. She holds humans, body and spirit, as they explore what is being held in the tissues and bones. Together they delve into pain, physical challenges, the traumas and joys, finding what wants to shift and move. The work is around finding pathways to safety, ease, and pleasure through touch in a collaborative container based on consent and boundaries. She is the mother of two amazing humans, an 11 year old and a 23 year old, has moved through the (fiery and watery) menopause rites, and feels she has finally come home to herself.
We long to witness more of the vitality that we see radiating from the elder woman who has traversed the darkest deepest inner wilds of her soul, psyche, soma, and womb — and made it to the other side of this alchemical process, that has likely been a messy and mysteriously alchemical endeavour.
She who no longer exiles parts of herself at the expense of being accepted by all. She who refuses to shrink in shame or to sever herself from her life-force. She who consistently claims what she desires.
She who only offers what she truly has the capacity for, as she shares her gifts with her community. She who embodies her fullest expression of her sexual and her creative self. She who rests when she needs rest.
She who grieves what longs to be grieved. She who has been humbled and alchemically changed forever, because she has been willing to orient herself and her heart towards that which will bring her closer to the embodiment of the truth, as a doorway to true aliveness and radiance from within. She who is in service to her community and the Earth.
She who has become an entirely different being, perhaps even to herself. She who is learning to walk in the world as a truly embodied elder.
She who radiates a different kind of vitality
and power and beauty — that we, as a culture, are not familiar with.
It originates from within.
She did not go out THERE to find it.
She went INSIDE to ignite it.
There are obvious reasons why this particular rite of perimenopause into menopause is the least talked about, researched, or communally explored.
Because — IT HOLDS POWER. Period.

Week 1 – Entering the Spiral Together
In our first week together we will land and find our ground through bringing in our voices, clarifying why we are here and beginning to map where we are in this rite of passage.
We will become intimate with the internalized ideas and beliefs that we hold around the midlife, begin to explore what is true for ourselves, and what lives in our blood and bones. Together we will compost what no longer feels valid or supportive through ritual practice.
This is a threshold of descent, and ascent, where we emerge more ourselves. Through this journey together, we will acknowledge our lived experience, all that we have learned and what we may want to unlearn, hold all of our iterations of self, offering thanks and blessings to all of our parts, all that we’ve been, who we are now, and who we are deepening into.
Together— we will step into a space of shedding and reclamation within the alchemical container of community. This is a rite of passage that asks us to step into our power.
Week 2 – The Rites of Fire
In week two we will explore the rites of fire and how the heat of this transformational time will often bring forth and reveal buried anger, passion and desire through the body. In the apprenticeship to this alchemical fire, we have the opportunity to learn from the wisdom of our anger and the protection and deep trust that it can provide. Anger is often the energy of change, and it can also contain the unexpressed energies that we hold.
If we cultivate courage and curiosity, the element of fire will also help to reconnect us to what truly ignites, inspires, and awakens us in midlife. The heat of this time can help to thaw our nervous system out of a state of freeze, so we can access new dimensions and sensations in the body. Desire can become a compass, as it points to what has meaning and value for us.
“A Woman who is in contact with her heat, her fire, is in a state of intense sensory awareness.” – Maria Souza
Week 3 – The Rituals of Water
In week 3 we will be exploring the rites of water through actively tending our relationship to grief.
When we work with the waters of our grief knowing that this transitional time is an opening, we can move towards much needed gentleness and compassion towards ourselves; for the countless times in our lives when we did not have access to this. Our intentional grief tending allows us to unravel from the burdens of the past and reconnects us to the clarity of our hearts.
By allowing the waters of our sorrows to flow, letting the unexpressed or unacknowledged grief move, and sharing our sorrows with one another, we can make space for what wants or needs to come in. There will be rituals for this grief as we shed our skins and make offerings to the earth.
“A woman in harmony with her spirit is like a river flowing. She goes where she will without pretense and arrives at her destination prepared to be herself and only herself.”
- Maya Angelou
Week 4 – The Erotic: The Meeting of Water & Fire
In week four, we will be invoking and getting curious about our unique relationship to the erotic. The erotic can include sex, but it exists largely outside of our sexuality as well. Our erotic energy is deeply connected and woven into what we love and desire. The energy of our eroticism is often revealed through leaning into and embodying what brings us alive and the courage to stop engaging with what drains us.
When we find and follow what makes us feel more erotically alive in midlife, we open up deep channels of self-expression and remembrance. Tending our intimate relationship to eroticism is a practice like anything else, and we will be exploring the possibilities of how we may court the erotic in our lives during this rite of passage.
Erotic energy is our vital, instinctive, life-force and it is deeply connected to how much we are living true to who we really are. We remember, together.
Week 5 – Sex, Weaving Fire & Water
Week 5 we’ll delve deeper into eroticism and its relationship to sex and sexuality. We will get curious around the fire and waters of our wombs and the creation power that lives there as we reclaim parts of our sexual selves during this rite of passage. When we work with the elemental energies of rising and building, and slowing and quieting, we grow in our midlife sexuality and in our expression in the world.
We will also get curious about what kind of touch we like, our pathways to arousal, what is supportive, and how this knowing ultimately feeds our aliveness. As we become more present to our aliveness, to our power, we can live more fully into the myriad of ways that we can express and experience our sexuality and eroticism.
During this week we will dive into female pleasure anatomy and learn some Sex Ed that most of us didn’t get during our first rite of passage!
Week 6 - The Medicine of Laughter in Midlife
In week six we will be bringing forth one of the most erotically healing energies: a woman’s wildly unconstrained laughter. The fun-loving, crude, playful, irreverent, and joyfully expressive woman who laughs out loud at the absurdity of it all – is a revolutionary force.
We will invoke and work with an old Goddess who is known for her wild energy, her sexuality, and her healing power of laughter and explore the importance of accessing and embodying this energy during our midlife passage. We will use the power of story, myth, and laughter as a way to remember how to embody these generative energies.
A vital element in some of the old myths is the use of a woman’s laughter to “bring the world back into balance” (Winifred Milius Lubell).
“In laughter, a woman breathes fully, and when she does, she may begin to feel unsanctioned feelings. And what could these feelings be? Well, they turn out not to be feelings so much as relief and remedies for feelings, often causing the release of stopped up tears or the reclamation of forgotten memories, or the bursting of chains on the sensual personality.”
– Clarissa Pinkola Estés
Week 7 - Celebration, Integration & Closing Ritual
Week 7 is a celebration of our communal journey into the portal of perimenopause and menopause and into our collective pathways towards radically wise and wild eldering. It is a return from our communal descent and an acknowledgment of our deep knowing of the vast power that we all carry.
Our hope is that The Midlife Spiral will lovingly support you in remembering what you are ready to remember during this rite of passage through fire and water. We hope it can offer an opportunity to embody a more honest expression of your being-ness and a deep connection to the spiraling web of life and death.
You will be held, witnessed, challenged, and invited into a more rooted expression of your becoming the vision of the elder-in-training that you are.
We hope you will join us!
With fierce love and devotion to learning from this rite of passage,
Elisa & Leigh
We will journey inwards, together.
We will write from our wombs, together.
We will sit in counsel, together.
We will craft rituals of remembrance, together.
We will nourish and move our bodies, together.
We will weave our emerging stories of this vital time in our lives, together.
This class will provide a solid container of exploration, and it will always point you back in the direction of YOUR own emergent inner wisdom and knowing.
This journey on the spiral is yours.
Your wisdom is needed!
Classes will be recorded, but your participation within the group energy is where the majority of the collaborative learning and remembering will occur. We ask that you plan to attend most of the classes live.
We begin together on Wednesday, April 22.
